Empathy project

The person that I interviewed with Moses was a gardener called David. I choose him because I felt like I would understand his story better. And I also recorded sound with Moses, so there are few questions asked by him and few questions asked by me. Although that day was my first day of doing gardening I felt like I would understand David better than I could understand a kid. (And I know that you said that the relationship needs to be built over long period of time, but then gardening wasn't available, and I'm not going to use that as an excuse, I admit that i didn't build up the relationship for longer period of time, and now I'm sorry that I didn't.) And one another reason why I chose David as the person that I will interview is because I like gardening and I also wrote that in one another post. I feel relaxed when I do gardening, and I feel like David likes gardening as much as I do.

Here's the voice record of us doing the interview.

Mr.Sheblak I didn't know how else to attach this audio file, so i added it to google drive from where you can download it. If you know any other way to upload audio file just tell me tomorrow and I will upload it like that.

The story from 1st person perspective:

My name is David and I came to Diepsloot from North-West. I work here in Afrika Tikkun as a gardener. I started working here in Afrika Tikkun in 2007. I wake half past five and I come to Afrika Tikkun at seven o'clock. I start working at half past 7. I only do gardening, because I like doing gardening, I do gardening because I like to plant crops. When I pick them up they are fresh and they can be eaten fresh or they can be put into food(fresh food is better than market food). And because I do gardening people here at Afrika Tikkun rarely have to go and buy vegetables. Almost all the time I work alone, but sometimes I get volunteers to help me, and that's when you come to part. I like to work here because people don't have to go buy the vegetables that can be really expensive, they can get the vegetables here for free. I don't take any vegetables back home they only stay here. And also I'm running short of the plants, and I would be really grateful if you could bring some plants. And also people from community come and eat here, and I am really happy that I can help so many people just by doing gardening. I'm here almost every day; I don't come here on Saturday or Sunday because I go to church.

My personal inventory:
Strengths:

  1. Playing sports
  2. Doing gardening
Weaknesses:
  1. Speaking(sometimes i'm too scared that I will mispronounce something)
  2. Sympathizing or empathizing with people.
Talents:
  1. I can make good HTML websites.
  2. Sometimes I make video games (but usually I make games only when I have to, because I have to learn much more about making game).
Skills:
  1. Playing tennis, volleyball, and basketball.
  2. Doing websites.

How will I pay it forward in my project?
I'm doing sports in Afrika Tikkun. We are playing all sorts of sports with kids. Each time when we come back we try to teach kids to play sports, and each time I think that they enjoy playing sports more and more. The way that we pay it forward is that we teach the to love sports and then they will most likely share that love for sports with other kids that don't go to Afrika Tikkun.

5 Stages:
Investigation:
Firstly I need to find out what is Afrika Tikkun about. I will go to their website and I will find out what I can do. After that I will choose the things that I think I could do well and i will do them. The things that I like to do are sports, but when we don't bring stuff for playing sports I will be doing gardening. I like gardening because when I go back to Serbia, I always help my mom and dad with gardening. And I like doing that too, it makes me relaxed. I choose Afrika Tikkun because they have the things that I like to do, and I can help them by doing this.

Planning/Preparation:
Playing sports doesn't really need much planning, you just go and play, but if you want to teach them to play better you would need to think little bit more. If we were to teach them, they might get bored, because some of the exercises in sports are just boring, I know that because I play sports a lot. So that's why we won't teach them t play sports, we will just play sports. While gardening I will help kids in Afrika Tikkun to get fresh vegetables, and I will help them to plant seeds and do everything around them that i need to do.

Action:
I go to Afrika Tikkun every tuesday, and I play sports almost everyday, and I can see that kids are enjoy playing sports. I also enjoy playing sports, playing sports makes my day perfect, when I play sports I block out everything that happened and I only play, and I also believe that kids also block out everything bad that happened to them that day. I do gardening when we don't have sports equipment. Yesterday I did gardening because we didn't have equipment. We were cleaning up the garden so it can be planted again. And I will do that until the garden is ready to be planted with seeds.

What's empathy:
Researched definition for empathy:
It's the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

Social justice you tube videos

In 60's and 70's.

In the video in saw how people were happy, white and black people were happy, they played with their families and every was happy. In these years white people didn't think that black people aren't good, and white people didn't discriminate against them.

In 80's.

Everything the overall mood changed drastically. It changed from peaceful and happy mood to violent and unhappy mood. White people controlled the streets, if somebody came out they would shoot him. Many street boycott's occurred, stones and bullets were flying around the streets. Streets were abandoned and the vegetation died out, because of the constant attacks, and because of the tear bombs that were fired, at people.

The differences:

In 60's and 70's both races came along really good. In the same period of time everyone was happy. But after 70's everything started to heat up. White people started to discriminate against black people, streets became abandoned because of the constant boycott's. The boycott's often resulted someone dying at both sides. The atmosphere in 60's and 70's was really peaceful, but that atmosphere changed after 70's.

How did people manage to live in two different worlds.

In 60's and 70's people could live in two different worlds's because nobody got into a way of the happiness that both races had in this time. But as soon as white people tried to control black people those two worlds started to collide with each other, resulting boycott's and demonstrations. And those two worlds were colliding together until both sides agreed on something, and after that agreement the two worlds separated and became two different worlds again. But the collision still happens, because some people can't forget what happened to them.

My definition for social justice:

Social justice is a concept, of people being equal in their society.

Social justice and global issues

Investigation:

What is social injustice?

Social injustice is a concept relating to the claimed unfairness or injustice of a society in its divisions of rewards and burdens and other incidental inequalities.

Planning:

I go to afrika tikkun every Tuesday. There we play sports with kids that are there. We play basketball and sometimes we pass soccer ball around. And we will continue to do this until we finish this school year. The plan is to play as much sports with them as possible so they could enjoy themselves, and if we do that every Tuesday they will get better at it. When they get better they could try to get a scholarship in a college just by playing one sport really good.

Action:

As I said in the previous stage, we will try to help them to understand sports better, so they could start playing the sport that they like. We do this every Tuesday, and every other Tuesday there are many more kids joining us to play sports with us because they see that other kids get stronger by playing sports and that they enjoy themselves. Every Tuesday we try explain to them some new concepts about sports, and we show them some tactics and strategies so they could play more confidently.

Reflection:

I think that our idea is working and kids are starting to come and play sports with us. Scholarship is one possibility to a person if he's good at sports. But sports could result in something else too, it can help kids to become stronger physically. And getting stronger physically can lead to less unfairness in society, because people would look at the person that is fit with more respect, and when that happens injustice in the society would decrease.

P.S: This what I wrote here doesn't make much sense. But that is what some of us do there.

Yushi: You sure? We could meet outside of practice.
Rey: we could but…
Coach: Oh great. Now we have two gay guys on this team. So lovebirds anyone want to explain?
Yushi: oh… well…
Coach: Don’ even bother, I quit before someone else on this team tells me that the two are gay. This team is no more.
